Bob Dolman om writer's block

In the two workshops that I am teaching at Cinemantrix in July, there is a common theme that I hope we are able to explore. It is the conflict that all creative artists face: What feels right and true in our hearts, and what seems to be demanded by the culture we live in. That culture includes the film and television business, which survives on financial profit.

When these two forces contradict each other, artists sometimes get stuck. They feel pulled in different directions. It is often the source, for instance, of what is called "writer's block" or "the actor's nightmare." We are torn and confused and so we stop. We fall prey to perfectionism, distraction, procrastination, and many fears and insecurities.

In my opinion, these fears and confusions are pure rocket fuel. They provide energy in your creative process, and by working through these struggles you can often solve story problems, character problems, while breaking free into your own personal way of expressing yourself, fully and magnificently.

Where there is struggle there is art, but this does not mean misery. It means opportunity. Yes, even the conflict between your heart and the business you want to work in can fuel your creative passion--and by doing so, much of that conflict will be resolved.

The music in your heart and the world you want to entertain are not enemies. They must exist together, and they can.
While writing and acting, and playing and working, we're going to delve into this, my friends. I'm looking forward to it.
