Masterclass - Directing and writing with Bob Dolman

This is a specially designed masterclass for directors, screenwriters and actors. It is a unique opportunity to collaborate and create scenes that will be performed in class, under Bob’s supervision and instruction. The ultimate goal of the workshop is to help you develop material that you can produce or market to production companies.

For Directors

You will hone your skills by working with scripts written by writers in the class, by blocking scenes, and by directing actors. Nothing is more instructive than the actual experience of directing—and Bob will guide you with his own experience as a writer/director.

For Screenwriters

You will have the golden opportunity to experience what happens to scenes you’ve written when it’s brought to life by directors and writers. You yourself may choose to direct what you’ve written. You might even want to act!

For Actors

You will get to practice your art of acting in ways you can never do alone. You’ll receive written script material. You’ll be directed through rehearsal and performance. And you’ll be working with other actors. And you may choose to write and/or direct yourselves.

Bob will oversee all of the scenes created in this masterclass. He has worked as a Hollywood screenwriter and director with actors like Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon, and has written screenplays for George Lucas and Ron Howard. He has worked as a writer on several television shows as well. He is a beloved teacher and coach at our studio.

From Bob:

This workshop invites and encourages you to expand your creative experience. By doing so, you will enrich your main interest and practice.

For example, if you’re an actor, and in the workshop you write a scene, or direct a scene, your understanding of acting will deepen. Or if you’re a director and you let yourself act in a scene, you’ll get a sense of what an actor feels while performing, and this will make you a better, more sensitive director. As for writers, I speak and teach from my own experience: when I attempted to act and to direct, I saw the writing of a screenplay in a new light. For all these roles and aspects come together in the making of a film.

Our approach will be to “do by doing,” that is, learn through the experience of writing, acting and directing, and collaborating together. We will create scenes, block and rehearse them, then present them to be watched by the rest of the class. And I, as your teacher, will provide guidance drawn from my own years of experience as a writer and a director and, on a few occasions, an actor.

It really should be called a “playshop,” because we’re putting on little plays, and the work we do will be playful: inventive, experimental and fun.

Networking

This workshop is an opportunity for all directors, actors and screenwriters to network and create new contacts in the film industry. Many of the participants at previous masterclasses have gone on to develop projects together.

The masterclass is held by Hollywood Screenwriter and Director Bob Dolman. Bob has won two Emmys for his screenplays. He has worked with actors like Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Susan Sarandon and Goldie Hawn and developed and written screenplays for George Lucas and Ron Howard. Has has also been a producer on several major Hollywood film. He is a beloved teacher and coach at our studio.

This masterclass is held at our film studios in Stockholm.
